Book Review: You Deserve Each Other

Updated: Jan 14, 2024

Author: Sarah Hogle

Very LOL-worthy! This book was just the right amount of raunchiness, love, and humor!

A great change of pace from your usual nemesis to lover trope, Sarah Hogle brings readers headfirst into a story of lovers turned into enemies… turned into maybe lovers again?

This book follows the experiences and thoughts of Naomi Westfield as she’s months away from marrying the perfect man. But what happens when the man you’re supposed to marry is suddenly the #1 one man in the world that you can’t stand? Between him and his overbearing mother turned momzilla, Deborah, Naomi is ready to call it quits. But working at a small shop in a middle of nowhere town, she doesn’t have many options when she’s facing the entirety of the wedding bill if she cancels.

So what options is she left with? Trying to make her fiance be the one to pull the plug! Thus begins the extreme makeovers, pranks, and not-so-subtle inconveniences directed at Nicholas (and his mother). This results in unfortunate bangs, unedible dinners, and a car she doesn't know how to drive, but it seems to be working! Soon, Nicholas is firing right back at her as he tries to accomplish the very same thing. But in their effort to find out how to get under each other's skin, they actually start to learn more about each other than ever before. The question in the air remains, will they go through with the wedding? After everything they've put each other through?

This book is full of bitter thoughts, fun times, and cute moments between the two that you don’t want to miss! If you’ve ever had an overbearing mother-in-law, this is also the read for you! This book will help you learn how to overcome your own Deborah, find ways to appreciate your partner, and learn all about falling in and out of love!

If you love witty banter in a book, this book is about 70% sass and we are here for it!

My husband and I read this book to each other every night for a week until we finished it and it was not only hilarious but also a great reading experience to go through together because it allowed us to reflect on our own relationship in a fun and new way!

Favorite Lessons:

“It dawns on me that I haven’t seen him genuinely happy in forever. I’ve been so concentrated on my own unhappiness that I haven’t noticed his. I’ve been fooling myself by thinking he’s been content all along. How arrogant, to assume he was content with me when I so obviously wasn’t content with him.”

“He needs me to give voice to my feelings, because he’s not a mind reader and it’s not okay that I soak up what he gives without offering myself in return. I can’t let him think he’s alone, not for one moment.”

Favorite Quotes:

I’m a miserable cynic (a new development) and a dreamy romantic (always have been), and it’s such a terrible combination that I don’t know how to tolerate myself.”

“Relearning you has been the best thing that’s ever happened to me”

“Being in love is frantic. Fluttery. Falling. It’s nervous sweats and pounding heartbeats and a feeling of tremendous rightness”

“I tried to keep him at a safe distance where he could only see the decent parts of me and it made us both miserable. I inadvertently let him in to see the ugly parts but instead of running away like I’d counted on him to do, he wrapped his arms around all of that ugliness and didn’t let go.”
